There, the water cools, becomes denser, and sinks to the ocean floor, driving the circulation. If this system were to halt, the East Coast of North America and much of Europe would experience a drastic drop in temperatures, though not quite an ice age. The last time the AMOC shut down was during the most recent ice age, triggered by a massive glacial lake bursting and releasing a flood of freshwater into the Atlantic.

In “The Day After Tomorrow,” climatologist Jack Hall, played by Dennis Quaid, warns that climate change could trigger a similar event. The film depicts oceanographers noticing an abrupt cooling in the Atlantic, leading to superstorms and the rapid freezing of New York City. While this is a Hollywood exaggeration, Boers told Insider that the real effects would unfold over decades, and North America would not get as cold as the movie suggests.

Why the AMOC Collapse Is a Concern

The study’s findings underscore the fragility of the Earth’s climate system. Boers emphasized to Insider that if the AMOC were to collapse, it would be extremely difficult to reverse. The potential consequences extend beyond temperature drops, affecting weather patterns, sea levels, and ecosystems across the globe.

While the immediate outlook is not as dire as the film’s portrayal, the trend is worrying. The AMOC’s weakening is a clear signal that climate change is having profound effects on ocean circulation, with far-reaching implications for the planet.
