28-Pound Deer Stands Its Ground Against 3,400-Pound Rhino in Polish Zoo

A 28-pound Reeves's muntjac named Tata squared off against a 1.7-ton female rhinoceros named Maruśka at the Wroclaw Zoo in Poland, and the smaller animal walked away victorious in a confrontation captured on video and shared widely across social media.

The footage shows Tata, a deer species native to southeastern China and Taiwan, repeatedly charging at Maruśka, clashing its small antlers against the rhino's horn-tipped snout. At first, the rhino appears amused, swinging its head side to side, but by the end of the clip, the muntjac's persistence seems to have won the day.

The zoo posted the video on Facebook with a playful caption in Polish, joking that "someone probably forgot to look in the mirror this morning." The post added, "He has to discharge energy and show who's boss—even if the sparring partner weighs 1.7 tons," and asked, "Who would have thought that such a warrior lurks in this tiny body?"

Social media users were equally entertained. One Reddit user commented, "Something about the ridiculous power scaling makes this hilarious," adding, "Rhino could squish muntjac under foot and instead they're both dancing around."

Reeves's muntjacs are known for their small stature, with males sporting antlers that typically measure up to four inches and tiny tusks that can reach two inches. They also produce a dog-like bark when provoked or during mating, a sound that is surprisingly intense for an animal of its size.

Why the Encounter Wasn't a Real Fight

According to local news outlet Zielony Wrocław, rhinos generally tolerate other animals in their territory because they fear no other species—except tigers. Wrocław zookeeper Maciej Okupnik explained that muntjacs and rhinos often interact both in the wild and in captivity, and despite muntjacs being "very territorial," the two species typically get along.

Okupnik told the outlet, as translated by The Telegraph, "This time, Tata got a little carried away by his hormones, but he wasn't really taking any risks. It's more like theatre and you can see Maruska is having a little fun."

The encounter highlights the unusual dynamics that can arise when different species share space in captivity. While the video may look like a David-and-Goliath battle, the zookeeper's comments suggest it was more of a playful display than a serious confrontation.
